Expressive Type

EXPRESSIVE TYPE

So this week I wanted to challenge myself and fine some really good expressive type. Type used without images. Just type itself.  And I came across these two examples. The first is honestly because I was literally laughing for five minutes. I thought it would be cool to share with you guys! I loved the way they did it with the S being really big in the center and showing the serif that got shot at the bottom. Looks pretty legit to me no?

The second one definitely got my attention. Its a typeface "Hoefler" Which this is a great example for Erica's post since its a Hoefler & Co typeface. This poster is awesome because they really knew how to express type here, By the use of textures and weights and scale. What do you guys think?

  1. Well, now I'm heading out the door with Bob Marley singing in my head - thank you for that! I have a question for the next reader: Why, in the second example, do you think the letters of "Hoefler" are falling down the page and crashing into text below? I have my theory... what is yours?

    1. :) Well your very welcome! As too the question for example number two; I think it is falling because maybe they made the typeface better and its more enhanced? Because on some of the words/phrases it is crashing into are "refine, used on Macintosh, was designed" Definitely creates interest and emphasis! Love to hear your theory!

    2. I was thinking that the new font was really "heavy", with its 27 different faces. That is a BIG family. But I keep looking at the R, and feel like I'm missing the hidden meaning...

  2. Both of these examples are great! Simple, black & white designs always catch my attention. The second example really shows off weight and motion, which as we know is not easy to do. I really enjoyed these! Also, I laughed at the first one too :)

  3. Those are great finds!! I really like the Shot the Serif one!! I love Bob Marley, my dog's name is Marley! But I like the song and I love that they were able to make such a funny reference that was so recognizable. I definitely think one of the biggest challenges as a designer is to be limited or constricted on the use of imagery being that its easier to connect with the target that way. With that being said I really enjoy the other as well because I was playing with my Hip-Hop poster at angles and overlapping for awhile, its really tough to do and the execution by the designer at Hoefler & Co.

  4. I love these posters! The first one is quite comical but the second one really shows how to successfully use weight and dramatic size change to your advantage!
