Typography Murals

I found these while looking through the creative bloq site. They are beautiful murals and really opened my eyes to the different ways and emotions that you can convey with using type! Worth a look!

  2. These are great Colleen - and Alex Fowke is using a traditional signmaker's approach by creating the designs in Illustrator, and then outputting them onto colored vinyl sticky-back paper. (I actually just leaned that process to add words to old street signs in a public art project I did last year) It is a lot like what graphic designers used to do before computers with Press Type.... only on a much smaller scale. Fowke seems heavily influenced by Victorian/Art Deco typography don't you think?

Here is a link to the design studio that created the Manchester UK mural - check out their typographically driven design work: http://www.unitedcreatives.com/

  3. Woah! Mind is officially blown! I really want to do a mural now. It looks like an awful lot of work but Its so cool to see how the type comes to life when its on the wall and its put to use. I think I agree Coni. I think that Fowke does seem influenced by Victorian/art deco. I also like that the examples all stayed with consistent colors. Like the blacks and some reds. Its very clean and bold.

  4. I really like this Alex Fowke!! His work is bold and simple at the same time! Really amazing execution on the Olly Murs and Sony projects!! I would love to learn the process myself because I'm just staring at my walls now like I've found the key and yet I don't know where to start!! The United Creatives also have some very interesting designs.

    1. I'm happy to explain the process to you - lots of eye/hand coordination when applying the sticky-back vinyl letters.. but it's also so very satisfying to produce something that is a combination of hand skill as well as computer skill.

  5. This type of art style has always peaked my interest, everything is so clean clear cut and just pleasuring to the eye! I love how all they use is black and white yet it still has so much energy in it. The fact that someone can make type look so entertaining always inspires me to try to do the same.
