Welcome to our Expressive Typography class this spring at NEiA.
Part of your classwork this semester will be to blog in this space about contemporary typography that you discover and want to share with the class. Let the fun begin!
To begin the discussion - I came across a video about David Smith's hand-drawn/digital typography for musician John Mayer's Born and Raised album cover design. Watch the video and tell us what you think.

Hi !
ReplyDeleteWow! This video was so amazing! So inspirational! The next time I complain about school or a project I will remember this video!
ReplyDeleteThis video was awesome! David is extremely talented and passionate and it definitely shows through his work. Very inspirational!
ReplyDeleteThis man's talents are nothing short of amazing, his patience and abilities to craft such beautiful pieces of art were so inspiring to watch! All the tiny details that no one would ever notice unless they watched him work is what makes all his work that much more incredible.
ReplyDeleteThis just reminds me that if you really want to be great at what you do then you really have to push yourself! Anyone can go to art school and learn design terms and Adobe programs but, if you really want to stand out and be GREAT at this gnarly field we call Graphic Design then your really going to have to push yourself! Remember this field is SUPPOSED to be exhausting!!! I can't even imagine the work that John and David did to become masters at their craft!
ReplyDeleteAfter seeing the process David Smith went through by applying such a high level of craftsmanship, it is clear to me on what kind of example he is setting for the rest of us. One where everything is broken down to show how much care it takes to reach a final outcome that might be considered a masterpiece. This is only the beginning, and essentially we must follow this model so we all can recognize what great typography looks like as well as how to achieve it.
ReplyDeleteMy mind is blown. Being a John Mayer fan and just the perception I have of him I could expect something like this from him. With that being said David Smith is a Titan in the strength and dedication he put into that album it is amazing in any and every way imaginable. The video was amazingly detailed and put together to really make you appreciate the effort and craft, unbelievable skill to create something so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWow. I can't even imagine going through that long, detailed process. David Smith is truly remarkable. With my major being Web Design, I am not familiar with a lot of the famous Graphic Designers, such as David Smith and would definitely share this with my friends. What an inspiring video!
ReplyDeleteIncredible, his pencil renderings remind me a lot of Aaron Horkey. I really appreciate artists who take their work a step beyond what others are doing. Their is always something special about hand crafted work.
